Children Killed During Fighting In Mon State

Two children are reported to have been killed during fighting between resistance groups and regime armed forces in Burma's Mon State.

According to local reports, the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) Brigade 1 and the Thaton People's Defence Force (TPDF) attacked a Burma Army (BA) convoy travelling on the Yangon-Mawlamyine road between Thaton and Beelin townships on 30 March.

It's unclear which group fired the bullets that struck a civilian vehicle, hitting the two children (6 and 8 years old) and a 40-year-old man. One of the children was killed on the spot, while the other died at Thaton Public Hospital, where the man is being treated. The bodies of the children were cremated the same day. All three victims are from Myae Ni Kon in Thaton Township.

Travellers told NMG that the road between the two townships in Mon State was blocked because of the fighting.

KNLA Brigade 1 frequently clashes with BA in Thaton Township, where the brigade is based, as well as in Nyaung Lay Pin Township in Bago Region and parts of Karen State.
