Ayeyarwaddy Times Editor Sentenced In Pathein

The editor of a media outlet received two years in Pathein Prison in Burma's Irrawaddy Region for sedition during a trial that was held in the prison's courthouse.

“He posted photos of protests on his Facebook page and interviewed government workers who joined the Civil Disobedience Movement, which is why the military arrested him,” a family member of Myo Min Tun told NMG on condition of anonymity.

Soldiers arrested the former Ayeyarwaddy Times editor and senior reporter for Myitmakha News Agency at his home in Pathein on 22 October 2021 and charged him with violating Article 505 (a) of Burma's Penal Code. The six months he's already spent behind bars will be deducted from his total sentence.

A lawyer, who wishes to remain anonymous, told NMG that Myo Min Tun declined legal representation. ''He said he'd be sentenced to two to three years in prison even if he got a lawyer.''

In March, the Pathein prison court also sentenced journalist Ye Yint Tun of the Myintmar Thandaw Sint (The Myanmar Herald) to two years imprisonment for violating Articles 505 (a) and 505 (b).

According to a prison staff who spoke to NMG on condition of anonymity, more than 350 political prisoners, including 50 women, have been incarcerated there since the military coup.
