Artillery Shell Strikes Prompt Evacuation of Kazuyang Villagers in Kachin State

After three artillery shells landed in Kazuyang village along the Waingmaw-Laiza Road in Kachin State, local residents left their homes, seeking refuge both with their town-based relatives and in war refugee camps.

Artillery shells rained down and detonated in Kazuyang village on August 5th. Subsequently, the villagers, apprehensive of the situation, swiftly relocated to more secure areas, bringing along their belongings to the extent they could manage.

"The villagers were really scared, so they quickly decided to leave. But there's also worry that the village might get burned down if there's no one left there”, a Kazuyang village woman told MNJ.

Initially, the villagers intended to transport essential household items to the war refugee camps, and subsequently, they planned to relocate themselves as well.

Parents of certain preschool-age children have withdrawn them from the village school and registered them in schools located in town areas.

Regarding the village children attending primary and middle school, predetermined arrangements dictate that in times of heightened military tensions, the school will be temporarily shut down, with a plan for them to resume classes once the situation stabilizes.

Families comprising children and elderly members have temporarily relocated to refugee camps close to towns and to the residences of relatives residing in urban areas. Others have opted to reside in town regions by renting houses for a brief duration.

Out of the three artillery shells that landed in the village, one detonated in front of the village administrator's house, while the remaining two exploded near civilian residences.

Furthermore, a fourth shell landed in a plantation outside the village without detonating.

In conjunction with the artillery shell impacts within the village, the present scenario involves Military Council troops positioned around the village. This has led the residents of Kazuyang to feel unsafe, prompting them to opt for departure from the village prior to a potential escalation in the military situation.

Earlier, the inhabitants of Kazuyang had been evacuating their residences, but they resumed their settlement after March 29th of this year.

Furthermore, nineteen families displaced by the conflict between the Military Council and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) in early July still remain unable to return to their homes, according to aid workers.
