Arakan State’s Covid-19 death toll for November stands at four

Four coronavirus patients have died in Arakan State during November as the month draws to a close, according to the state’s Covid-19 control committee, with the pandemic’s third wave in Myanmar receding even as global concerns grow about the new omicron variant.

One Covid-19 patient died on November 13, another two died on November 15 in Thandwe Township, and one more died on November 26 in Ramree Township, the Arakan State Covid-19 Control and Emergency Response Committee said.

The deceased Covid-19 patient in Ramree Township was a 33-year-old woman who was provided treatment at Kyaukphyu Township General Hospital, said U Japan Gyi, chair of the Lay Waddy Kula Rakhita Charity Association, who is assisting Covid-19 patients in the area.

“She died two days after arriving at Kyaukphyu Hospital. She was suffering from hypertension and diabetes. There’d been no death from Covid-19 in more than a month in Kyaukphyu,” he said.

He said that although Covid-19 infections have declined in Arakan State, people still need to be wary of contracting the deadly virus.

There have been 5,159 confirmed Covid-19 cases during the pandemic’s third wave in Arakan State, with 4,637 of them discharged from hospitals and 498 deaths statewide as of November 26, according to the Arakan State Covid-19 Control and Emergency Response Committee.

Twenty-four patients are currently receiving medical treatment in Arakan State; 17 in Sittwe, four in Thandwe, two in Gwa and one in Ann townships.
