Over 400 people, including democracy activists and Burmese students held a prayer meeting for the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi at the Mae Tao Clinic in Mae Sot on the Thai-Burma border on Tuesday...

Nang Dar Elkalae, general secretary of the Karen Women’s Organization and a leader of the prayer party, said that "they (junta) arrest people's leaders whenever they want to pre-empt something. They are attempting to detain Daw Aung Sann Suu Kyi because the 2010 general election is drawing near.  Therefore, we held a prayer meeting for the freedom of Daw Suu and other political prisoners."

Prayers were held and demands were made to release Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners immediately. The gathering also demanded that the US government take action quickly on the Burma issue. They assembly held aloft "Free Burma" posters.

Nang Dar Elkalae added that "Daw Suu was arrested because of an American who intruded into Daw Suu's house. Therefore, the US government has a responsibility towards the incident. We demand that the US does something".

When Burma's democracy icon Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is facing trial in a court in Insein prison, Burmese democracy activists, who are living abroad, demonstrated and shouted slogans in front of Burmese embassies.

The Burmese military junta has sued Daw Aung San Suu Kyi under article 22 and shifted her from her house to Insein prison on 14 May in the John William Yattaw case.
