Maungdaw: An officer of Burma's border security force, the Nasaka was shot dead by an unknown assailant in a village in the border township Maungdaw on 27 July, according to an official report.

The deceased was identified as Sergeant Soe Naing from an outpost located near Ma Kyi Chaung's police station in southern Maungdaw Township.

Village sources said an unknown assailant shot him around 6:30 pm while he was drinking locally-brewed alcohol along with another Nasaka officer, Win Myint, in a residential compound in Ma Kyi Chaung Village.

Sergeant Soe Naing died on the spot, while Win Myint managed to escape.

Burmese border authorities arrested some villagers after the incident and are now interrogating them about the shooting.

The reason behind the killing is unknown, but some officials and locals believe the murder is most likely the result of internal conflict in the Nasaka.

This is the first time a Nasaka personnel has been shot dead by an unknown assailant in such a manner on the Burmese border.
