Burma and Bangladesh exchanged few prisoners in a director level flag meeting held in a border village of Bangladesh on December 10 last, which also witnessed the signing of some agreements by the delegates representing both the neighboring countries, said an official from Burma.
The flag meeting, held at Gumdon village of Bangladesh located in the opposite of Taungbro, a Burmese sub-town under Maungdaw township witnessed the handing over of five Burmese prisoners by the Bangladesh side and two teenager boys from the Burma side.
The Burma delegation was led by U Soe Naing, Burma immigration department deputy director in the flag meeting that stared at 11 am and ended at 1.30 pm on Tuesday. Colonel U Moe Nyo, commander of 37 police battalion based in Taungbro also attended the meeting.
On the other hand, the Bangladesh delegation was led by the commander of 17 BGB battalion based in Cox’sbazar where the commander of 42 BGB battalion based in Teknaf was also present in the flag meeting.
During the meeting, the delegations discussed many border related issues like smuggling of drugs, cross border crimes, trafficking, communication between officials from both sides and finally the required peace & stability along the international border.
Though the border areas between Burma and Bangladesh normally remain peaceful, occasionally the incidents of cross border robberies, trafficking and drugs smuggling are reported from those locations.
Earlier high level border officials from both the countries met in Maungdaw on December 4 last to discuss many border related issues.
