Two Muslim men, who recently attacked a Buddhist monk while he was meditating on March 28 in Dhama Madai monastery near the Buthidaung prison, were sentenced to ten years by the Buthidaung Township court in northern Arakan state, Burma.
Mamad Inu and Zubai, both from Let Way Dack Pu Zun Chaung village in Buthidaung Township, were arrested soon after the attack on U Pynya Thiri, 30, took place.
According to U Pynya Thiri, he was dragged from a hut and stabbed by the 2 men with a sharp bamboo stick after he failed to give them Cheroots.
The monk immediately reported the attack to U Nara Padi, the head abbot of Dhama Madai monastery, and later to the Buthidaung Prison staff who informed the police.
Arakan state authorities have vowed to crack down on anyone instigating violence in Arakan state since sectarian violence broke out between Buddhists and Muslims in June and October of last year.
