The local authority in Mrauk U, the ancient city of Arakan, has shortened the night time curfew from Monday this week, said local residents and officials.

Night time curfew shortens in Mrauk UThe authority in Mrauk U imposed 10 hours of night time curfew from 8 PM to 6 AM in Mrauk U after clashes took place between Arakanese Buddhists and Muslims in the township in October last year.

“The authority reduced the curfew from 8 pm to 6 am to a eight-hour period between 10 pm and 6 am after local residents requested the township authority reduce the curfew time ,” said Ko Ni Min Tun from Mrauk U.

Residents in Mrauk U request the local authority reduce the night time curfew like other townships as they have been facing economic hardship/crisis due to the night curfew which deprived freely moving people their business.

According to new night time curfew, the residents in Mrauk U are required to remain indoors from 10 PM to 6 AM everyday.

Authorities have imposed night time curfews in nine townships – Sittwe, Maungdaw, Buthidaung, Kyauk Taw, Minbya, Mraybon, Kyauk Pru, Thandwe, Rathidaung and Pauktaw- in Arakan where sectarian violence took place severely in June and October last year.

The local authorities in those townships have shortened the night time curfew after the situation in all townships improved day after day around Arakan.
