Yangon: US ambassador to Burma Derek Mitchell invited and met on Tuesday some Arakanese leaders in the US embassy in Yangon regarding the recent situation in Rakhine state, said RNDP general Secretary U Hla Saw, who attended the meeting.
The meeting was held in the US embassy in Yagon from 5 to 6 PM on the day.
“ The US ambassador invited us because he wanted to know the present situation in Arakan State where some problems took place recently,” U Hla Saw said.
On 28 January, one Muslim villager was killed by the army during an attack on a forester. After that one government building was burned down by angry Muslims in retaliation. He said that he thought the invitation is likely to relate to the problems took place in Maungdaw on western Burma’s border on 28 January.
Five Arakanese leaders – U Tha Ban, patron of Arakan League for Democracy, U Zaw Aye Maung, minister of Rakhine affair in Yangon division, U hla Saw, secretary of Rakhine Natonal development Party, Daw Soe Khin Tint, president of Rakhine literature and culture organization and Ma Than Tha Sawe, secretary 2 of Rakhine network attended the meeting.
In the meeting, the US ambassador seemed to be anxious about the recent violence in Maungdaw Township, he said.
However, many issues related to Arakan state were discussed and exchanged between two groups- US ambassador and Arakanese delegations.
“The US ambassador explained the additional aid amount of 4.2 million to Arakan state was especially for victims who fled from homes during the violence in Arakan. He also brought up other issues like safety, education, and a better life and future. He also wants to see the reintegration of communities in Arakan state,” said U Hla Saw.
Rakhine affair Minister in Yangon division U Zaw Aye Maung also discussed the latest situation in Arakan state in the meeting.
