Maungdaw: Twelve Bangladeshi nationals who were arrested in Burma were officially handed over to Bangladesh on Sunday, according to border news sources.
They were said to be transferred after a meeting between the border guard forces of the two countries from 10 am to 12 pm at Daewa Nadi Hall in Maungdaw.
The meeting was attended by the Burmese team led by U Sein, an officer of the immigration department in Maungdaw, and the Bangladeshi team led by Kamarul Hassan, an officer of the battalion no. 42 of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) based in Teknaf in Bangladesh.
The two teams are said to have mainly discussed the issues of exchanging prisoners, cross-border narcotics smugglings, illegal border-crossings and border security between their countries in their meeting.
According to a news report by a Bengali newspaper, those twelve Bangladeshis who were transferred from Burma were arrested by the Burmese Nasaka forces when they were fishing in the Nat River on 26th of August.
They are said to be the residents of Kutudia Village in Teknaf Upazila in Bangladesh and now being kept in the police station in order to send to their families.
It is learnt that there are 244 Bangladeshi nationals who have been arrested between 2009 and 2012 in Burma.
Burma is said to have officially informed to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to take back those arrested Bangladeshis on 26th of August and 14th of November respectively, but is still unable to handover them to their country.
