Bangladesh Police arrested 112 people on charge of trying to go to Malaysia crossing the Bay of Bangal in engine boats, said a report of Bangladesh newspaper “ New age”.
The were arrested in Chhanua Khal(canal) area of Banskhali Township in Chittagong early on Monday, the report said.
The arrested men hail from Jessore, Khulna, Bagerhat and other parts of Bangladesh.
Ruhul Amin Siddiqui, an assistant superintendent of police, said they conducted a drive at about 3am on receiving message form the local Union Parishad chairman that more than one hundred people had thronged the seashore.
‘We cordoned the area and arrested 112 people from the seashore and from an engine boat,’ he told the newspaper.
One of the detainees said that he had paid Tk 2,000 to a broker and committed to pay Tk 2 lakh (US$ 2400 ) to him after reaching Malaysia.
The arrested people had assembled on seashore from different parts of the country to go to Malaysia illegally, paying money to human traffickers.
