100,000 Yaba or Methamphetamine tablets reportedly being trafficked from Burma were seized on Wednesday from a vehicle in Cox’s Bazaar in South East Bangladesh, close to Burmese border.
A police officer said that a total 100,000 tablets of Yaba in packs of 200 were being hidden in seven jute bags. They were then seized from a car driving through Egah in Cox’s Bazar in the evening yesterday.
“We seized this large amount of Yaba tablets on a secret tip. The tablets are known to be smuggled into Bangladesh from Maungdaw in Burma”, said the police officer.
However the traffickers had escaped while the police were looking for the tablets in the stopped car.
He said that the seized Yaba tabelts were likely produced from Burma-Thailand border and then cross-border syndicates had smuggled the tablets across the Western Burmese border into Bangladesh. The tablets were destined to be sold in Chittagong, Bangladesh's port city.
Bangladesh border security force also seized 50000 yaba tablets from a drug dealer, Mr Illiya,26, on Teknaf border, opposite Burmese town Maungdaw, last night while other two drug dealers along with 5161 yaba tablets were also arrested by Bangladesh Border Guard at Don Don Mia check port on Teknaf- Cox’sbazar high way.
According to sources from the border, Bangladesh is the destination receiving most of the yaba tablets being trafficked from Burma.
