New Delhi (Mizzima) - Burmese women in India’s capital New Delhi on Monday joined women from India, Nepal, Thailand, Tibet, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh in a celebration to mark South Asian Women’s Day held at the Delhi University campus.   

Organised by SANGAT, a South Asian Network of Feminists, the function  held discussions and shared  experiences among various women’s groups, where leaders of Women’s League of Burma (WLB), an umbrella group of 12 Burmese women’s organization, shared experiences of women under military-ruled Burma.

Traditional dances and songs were organized along with lighting of candles as a symbolic representation of peace, justice, and democracy in South Asia.

Thin Thin Aung, a Presidium Board Member of WLB, during her speech narrated to participants the Burmese military junta’s appalling rights violations against women.

“Women in Burma are not only physically abused but are often subject to mental assault. Women in remote ethnic areas are more vulnerable and are often subject to rights violations by the Burmese Army,” Thin Thin Aung said.
