New Delhi (Mizzima) - Aung San Suu Kyi’s lawyers on Thursday filed an appeal in the Rangoon divisional court regarding the sentencing and are preparing to submit their arguments on Friday.

“Today, we registered the appeal, and tomorrow we will present our arguments in the divisional court, which will then decide whether to accept our appeal,” lawyer Nyan Win said.

In August, the northern district court in notorious Insein prison sentenced pro-democracy leader and her two live in party housemates to three years in prison with hard labour on charges of violating her previous detention law by allowing uninvited American guest to stay in her lakeside home.

The court’s sentence, however, was commuted following a special order by the country’s military supremo Snr Gen Than Shwe to 18 months of suspended sentence, which also allowed her to serve the term at her home.

“We have chalked out 11 points of arguments for our appeal,” Nyan Win said.

After Suu Kyi was sentenced on August 11, Nyan Win said the opposition leader was unhappy over the court’s decision.

Suu Kyi, who has been under some form of detention for  more than 13  of the past 19 years, was charged with violating her detention law for accepting, John William Yettaw, in her house in early May.

But critics and the international community said the junta is using the incident as an excuse to further detain her so as to keep her out of its planned 2010 election fray.
