Chiang Mai - A man was killed on Sunday evening in a bomb explosion in Rangoon's suburban township of Shwepyithar.

The explosion took place at about 5:00 p.m. (local time) on Sunday evening in a civilian house in the northeastern part of Rangoon, Burma's former capital, and killed the resident, a local journalist who talked to the Shwepyithar Township Police station said.

"The police said the man was killed instantly," the journalist, who wished to remain anonymous, told Mizzima.

The journalist was also able to learn from police sources that the explosion was the result of a bomb and that police had found an additional three, unexploded bombs, inside the residence.

An official at the Shwepyithar police station, however, declined to comment on the incident when contacted by Mizzima, saying, "I am not authorized to say anything."

But an official at the Shwepyithar Township Peace and Development Council did confirm a blast had occurred, though he was unable to provide any details of the incident.

It was the second blast in Rangoon over the weekend. Earlier on Saturday, a bomb exploded in a football ground in Yankin Township.

Rangoon has been hit by frequent bomb blasts in recent months. In September, four bomb blasts at separate locations throughout Rangoon injured at least four men.
