New Delhi - The Burmese police chief has denied reports that several Burmese celebrities have been arrested and detained in connection with drug abuse.

Police Chief Khin Yi, during a rare press conference held in Nay Pyi Taw on 'World Drugs Day', rebuffed reports of several Burmese celebrities being detained and charged for chasing drugs.

"We have not arrested any celebrities nor charged any businessmen in connection with drug abuse," Khin Yi was quoted as telling reporters by Rangoon based Weekly Eleven Journal in this week's issue.

The clarification by Khin Yi came after reports suggested that at least 30 prominent Burmese celebrities were interrogated and arrested in connection with drug abuse last month. Maung Weik, a businessman in Rangoon was reportedly arrested in connection with a racket in drugs.

Besides, a local Rangoon weekly First Music, in its June 17 issue published an article that speaks of 'how celebrities can jeopardise their career by using drugs', along with pictures of seven prominent celebrities – Nandar Hlaing, Soe Myat Thuzar, Nawarrat, Gandarwin, Phoe Kyaw, director Maung Myo Min (Yindwinphit), and vocalist Phyo Gyi.

However, the Weekly was forced to publish an apology in its next issue on June 23, when the celebrities denied their alleged involvement with drugs.

But the Thailand based secretary of Burma Media Association, a media watchdog, said Khin Yi's denials only indicates that Burmese authorities are continuing to suppress the truth.

"They [authorities] are telling white lies, even when they know the truth. They have a tradition of distorting facts and providing misleading information. May be this time they want to cover up because of the authority's involvement in the mess," Son Moe Wai said.
