New Delhi - Burmese parliamentarians today appealed to law makers around the world to exert pressure on the Burmese military regime to implement political reforms and force it to reject its planned roadmap to democracy.
The parliamentarians, who were elected in Burma's last election in 1990, under the banner of Committee Representing Peoples Parliament (CRPP), on Monday urged parliamentarians across the world to stop the military junta from going ahead with its plans and reject its draft constitution, which the junta wants to put to a referendum in May
The Burmese members of parliament, who were denied power by the military, in a statement urged parliamentarians, congressmen, and senators around the world to push their respective governments to pressure the United Nations to pass a binding resolution on Burma.
In the statement, the Burmese parliamentarians "called for the UN Security Council to impose a binding resolution, which will instruct the regime to fully comply with the recommendations made by the UN Security Council, and strengthen the mandate of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and urge their governments to do the same."
The CRPP also called on parliamentarians to pressure their government "to stop selling weapons and intelligence systems to the SPDC [the Burmese junta] immediately and also urged their governments to call on the UN Security Council to impose a global arms embargo and financial and banking sanctions against the SPDC."
The CRPP also urged the people of Burma to unanimously vote 'No' in the ensuing referendum to show that it is rejecting the junta's decades long rule and their plan to legitimize the role of the military in governance.
Meanwhile, sources said, the Burmese military junta, as per its announcement in February, is preparing the ground for the forthcoming referendum by organizing and teaching the people at the grass root level to support the constitution in the referendum.
On Friday, the UN Human Rights Council, in a resolution, strongly deplored the human rights condition in Burma saying that the junta continues to engage in systematic violation of human rights, freedom of expression and detention of political prisoners.
