Nay Pyi Taw - US President Barack Obama will meet with Myanmar opposition leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on 13th November, the day the discussion on the report by the Constitutional Amendment Implementation Committee will begin, according to sources in the National League for Democracy.
US President Obama and other world leaders will attend the 25th ASEAN Summit to be held at the Myanmar International Convention Centre (1) in Nay Pyi Taw from 12th to 13th November.
The venue of the meeting between President Obama and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has yet to be made public, according to the sources.
Union Parliament Speaker Thura U Shwe Mann has said that the Union Parliament is scheduled to discuss the report on the 12th and 13th November. The report was submitted by the committee on 22nd October.
US President Obama will visit China, Australia and Myanmar during his November trip. It will be President Obama’s second visit to Myanmar, following his first in 2012.
President Obama’s planned visit coincides with the period when constitutional amendments will be discussed. Political observers say the Myanmar government is timing it this way because it wants to demonstrate to the international community that it is carrying out reforms.
Critics say the 2008 Constitution gives the military too much power and includes a clause that blocks Daw Aung San Suu Kyi from the presidency should her National League for Democracy take power in the coming 2015 general elections.
