There could be no place for unelected military appointees in a parliament chosen by proportional representation, a leading member of the 88 Generation Peace and Open Society movement said in Yangon on September 21.

Ko Ko Gyi was speaking at the release of a report monitoring the performance of the hluttaw at the office of the Open Myanmar Initiative.

He said that if proportional representation was introduced, it could not be restricted to the 75 percent of MPs who are elected by the people.

There could be no place for Tatmadaw MPs appointed by the military commander-in-chief in a parliament chosen by proportional representation, he said.

Ko Ko Gyi also said that "some parties are acting with transparency, while others are not".

Draft legislation on new voting systems is due to be discussed during the current sessions of the Amyotha and Pyithu hluttaws.
