Foreign investment in August was nearly half the US$5 billion targetted for the 2014-2015 fiscal year, Department of Investment and Companies Administration director-general U Aung Naing Oo told journalists this week.

Foreign investment totalling $2.443 billion, from 48 companies, was approved in August, U Aung Naing Oo told a news conference at the Inya Lake Hotel on September 14.

He said the total amount of foreign investment approved to the end of August from the start of the fiscal year on April 1 was $3.183 billion.

Much of the investment was in sectors that would increase exports and create jobs.

The 48 companies with investments approved in August included 15 in the export sector, 13 in oil and gas, three each in transport and communications and in construction, two in the hotels industry, one in the energy sector and three listed in the "other" category.
