Danger warning signs have been placed in 18 spots on the Yangon – Nay Pyi Taw – Mandalay Highway that suffer from standing water.

Police Captain Win Htut Aung of Nay Pyi Taw Highway Police Department told Mizzima on September 4 that the posts were located in the areas most affected by rainy season, not the areas that see the highest number of accidents.

U Pyae Phyo Hsat, a highway engineer said, “There will always be danger if drivers are undisciplined. If the vehiclesare in good condition and their drivers abide by the rules, accidents would not happen; we always take care to maintain the quality of the road.”

Statistics of the Highway Police Department show that between the opening of the highway on March, 25, 2009 and 22 April 2014, 353 people died and 1084 people have been injured the highway, leading the Yangon to Nay Pyi Taw stretch of the road to be dubbed ‘the Death Highway’.

In 2014, two mobile traffic camera units were brought in operation on the road and police statistics show that over 500 drivers have been caught driving in a dangerous manner.
