Lecturers at Yangon's Dagon University have been accused of offering inducements to students to prevent them taking part in a campus protest against the draft National Education Law on September 2.
The chair of the Dagon University Students Union, Ko Nan Lwin, made the accusation after the protest, which was attended by more than 100 students from nine universities throughout Yangon.
Ko Nan Lwin said the inducements offered by lecturers to encourage students not to participate in the protest included promises to pass them without taking exams.
Dr Arkar Moe Thu, chairman of the University Lecturers’ Union, said the target of the protest had been provisions in the draft law granting what he said were unwarranted powers to the National Education Commission and the Higher Education Collaboration Committee.
The powers included the right to shut a university, which would block the academic and managerial independence of the country's universities, Dr Arkar Moe Thu said.
