The number of complaints made against the operation and conduct of Yangon’s buses during 2014 is already double the number recorded in the whole of 2013, says an official from the Yangon Region Central Supervisory Committee for Motor Vehicles.

U Kar Kyaw told Mizzima that his organisation had recorded 330 complaints in 2013 and the number for 2014 had already reached 700 as of August 20.

He said reckless driving, not stopping at fixed bus stops, the unscheduled changing of routes, over use of the horn, physically mistreating customers and smoking on the bus were among regular complaints.

“We know there are weaknesses, we still can’t teach drivers and bus conductors to have good discipline and that is our weakness,” said U Kar Kyaw.

He added that the over-charging of bus fares was also a commonly reported grievance.

“To satisfy the public, we should consider using a ticketing system again,” said U Kar Kyaw.
