The authorities in Mandalay have lifted the curfew imposed on July 3 in response to communal violence that left two people dead but there has been no reduction in the number of security personnel deployed on the streets, a city official said.

The decision to lift the curfew was made by the Mandalay Region government on August 11, said U Win Zaw Naing, a district administrator with the Mandalay General Administration Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

"The situation in Mandalay is peaceful and the city is calm, so the order was lifted but the number of security forces will remain unchanged,” said U Win Zaw Naing.

He said more than 1,300 people had been cautioned for breaching the overnight curfew imposed in seven Mandalay townships after the communal violence began on July 1.

The trial of four people accused of having instigated the unrest by fabricating a rape claim began in Pyinmana Township court on August 4.
