A network that represents women’s groupsfrom across Myanmar has used Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s 69th birthday to announce that they believe she is the most suitable candidate for the next presidency.
In a statement made on June 19, ‘Women’s Political Action 2015’, a group formed to create an outlet for women’s voices in the upcoming election, said that their members of their fifteen organisations would work to back the campaign of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
“We have faith in our leader of the people, if she becomes president, the ethnic minority groups will be united,” said Ma Pyoe Lett Han, a member of the network.
“Recently she has made sacrifices and done all that she can for the sake of the country’s economy and the people’s welfare, that is why we support her,” she added.
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi sent a formal statement to a birthday celebration held in her honour at the National League for Democracy’s head office in Yangon.
“Birthdays are a time to reflect on your actions over the past year. As a politician, I prefer to contemplate what I have achieved in the interests of the country, rather than what I have gained personally," said the NLD chair.
Mizzima Daily reported that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi celebrated her birthday with 140 colleagues at the Hluttaw compound in Nay Pyi Taw.
