The National Unity Party have declared that they will take to the streets in protest if parliament amends constitutional article 59(f) and thereby paves the way for Aung San Suu Kyi to become president.

U Han Shwe, spokesperson for the party, made the statement during a press conference marking the end of a regional party convention, which attracted over 450 party members to Utopia Hall in Mandalay on May 20.

“If the hluttaw agrees to amend article 59(f) of 2008 constitution, we will organise public demonstrations against it,” said the spokesperson.

U Han Shwe added “We are in a period of transition, so we need a favourable environment. We must accept democracy and avoid narrow minded nationalism. We are in favour of a system of proportional representation.”

U Than Tin, the 88 year old retired Brigadier-General, who was elected chairman of the NUP on April 30, spoke about his plans to travel the length and breadth of the country. He said he intends to develop support by reaching out to and developing trust with farmers, labourers and the youth.

"If our party is to take part in 2015 election, we must set our sights high, we need a goal and that goal should be to win. We must accelerate our campaign from the grassroots upwards.”
