The leader of the opposition National League for Democracy, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, has spoken out against unethical behaviour in politics at a meeting with members of the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party.

“If you are involved in unscrupulous activities towards your political rivals because you fear losing an election, it will amount to unethical political behaviour that will not be conducive to the development of the country,” she said at a meeting with Amyotha Hluttaw MP U Khin Shwe, who was accompanied by about 200 USDP members from Kawmhu Township on a study tour of parliament.

“If we are involved in dishonest politics our country cannot develop,” the NLD leader said.

She urged USDP members to decide by themselves for whom they will vote in the elections due late next year.

“If you no longer want to accept your chosen one, you have the right to say you made a mistake; but be careful not to make a mistake again,” Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said.

U Khin Shwe’s Yangon Region constitutuency covers the Pyithu Hluttaw seat of Kawmhu, which Daw Aung San Suu Kyi won in a 2012 by-election.
