The Union Parliament today approved a proposal by a Mandalay Region MP to review a recent decision to increase the cost of electricity in Yangon.

The decision came after Aye Mauk, who represents the Lower House constituency of Mahlaing for the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party, sought urgent discussion on his proposal.

MPs will review the increase at forthcoming sitting of the Union Parliament which comprises both the Lower and Upper Houses.

Aye Mauk said he raised the issue because of public dissatisfaction over the electricity price rise.

The Yangon Electricity Power Supplying Committee announced the increase on October 25 and it took effect this month.

Yangon residents symbolically held candles when they protested against the increase at two locations in the commercial capital on the evening of November 6.

The increase has resulted in the cost of electricity for domestic use rising from a flat rate of 35 kyat a unit to 50 kyat a unit if usage exceeds 100 units.

The commercial tariff was previously a flat rate of 75 kyat a unit. Under the increase, the cost for using up to 5,000 units is 100 kyat a unit and for more than 5,000 units it is 150 kyat a unit.
