MP seeks Capital Punishment for rapists

MP Thein Nyunt will move a motion in the Parliament for amendment of the Penal Code so that rape offenders of minor girls under sixteen can be awarded capital punishment.

MP Thein NyuntMP Thein Nyunt from Thingangyun constituency said he will undertake a two-step plan to fight crime against women. He will make the motion for amendment of the Penal Code in the upcoming Eighth Session of the Parliament to be held in October. And in the next session of the Parliament he will propose a bill of Protection of Women from Sexual Violence.

“We have recently seen an increase in incidents of crime committed against minor girls who are the future of our country. These crimes seriously affect the dignity of our country.”

In Yangon Region, 80% of sex crimes were committed against minor girls under 18. Out of a total of 93 rape cases, 79 victims were minors, said Col. Tin Win, Regional Government Security and Border Affairs Minister at the Yangon Region Legislative Assembly, held on September 18.

He added that Child Rights Committees were formed in 45 townships in the Yangon Region and they have launched awareness campaign of sex crimes committed against minor girls. He said that they have also launched anti-crime operations on bootleggers, narcotic drugs, pornographic videos and drugs that boost libido.

According to Col. Tin Win, there were 135 rape cases in Yangon Region in 2012 and 88 of these cases were committed on minor girls. Out of these, 15 rape victims were under 10.
