The Parliamentary Joint Public Accounts Committee has released a report on August 27, stating that the Auditor General’s office had reported discrepancies in government spending but failed to provide details of their findings and actions taken against defaulting departments to the Parliament.

The Union Auditor General’s office had reported cash shortages in 118 government departments operating under 33 Ministries due to mismanagement of public fund spending.

AG Thein Htike confirmed the Committee’s contention at the Union Parliament session on August 29 by saying that they were unable to add all their findings and observations in the report.

But he assured the Parliament that, “In future, we shall include all our findings and observations in audit reports and latest data of actions taken against errant officials by the departments concerned.”

The Committee examined the audit report by the AG office for the second half of 2011-12 fiscal year on government spending and submitted a report of their findings to the Parliament on August 27.

They also reported that five government Ministries have to repay more than MMK 350 million and USD 22 million to the union budget. In addition, the Ministry of Mining has to pay back 32,000 ticals (320 viss, approximately 1152 lbs) of 24 carat gold.
