Aung San Suu Kyi called for the “military to have a special place in the hearts of the people” when speaking at the World Economic Forum in Naypyitaw on Thursday.

Mizzima FileSpeaking at a at a debate organized by the BBC at the 22nd World Economic Forum, the democracy icon stressed the need for “a serious and sincere approach” to the military and for the army to be one that Myanmar could be proud of like the one her father, Gen. Aung San, founded.

Suu Kyi has previously received criticism from members of her own party for her soft approach to the military that kept her under house arrest for almost two decades.

“What we need most of all is national reconciliation,” said the Nobel Peace Prize laureate, reasserting her wish to become president in 2015, saying that she would be lying if she said that she did not want to lead the country.

However, she acknowledged that there were many aspects of the controversial 2008 constitution—which currently prevents her from becoming president—that still need to be amended.

“If we are going to solve our problems we are going to have to face them squarely,” she said, calling for rule of law to be the first issue addressed in the country.
