The Myanmar government’s peace-making committee vice-chairman Aung Min, has sent a letter to the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) requesting a further round of peace talks in early May, according to peace broker Hla Maung Shwe.
Former railways minister and currently Naypyitaw’s chief negotiator with the ethnic armed groups, Aung Min spoke at the Myanmar Peace Center in Yangon where he said he had sent a letter to the KIO confirming the government’s offer that the two sides should meet in Kachin capital Myitkyina in early May.
“Minister Aung Min said he expected that once the KIO has contacted international observers to set a suitable date, they would agree to the meeting,” Hla Maung Shwe told Mizzima.
However, Kachin peace broker Gum Ja said that the KIO had not received the letter Aung Min spoke about.
At the last meeting between the KIO and the Myanmar government’s peace delegation on March 11, in Ruili, China, both sides agreed to hold peace talks within a month, but several attempts to set dates and venues for the meeting have been postponed.
