The residence of former UN Secretary-General U Thant has been restored to its original glory and opened as a museum on Sunday, according to a report in the state-run newspaper The New Light of Myanmar.

The U Thant Residence and Museum is located in a colonial building the Windermere compound in Yangon. Last year, The Yangon Heritage Trust, a NGO founded by U Thant's grandson, Dr. Thant Myint-U, was granted permission from President Thein Sein to renovate the location into a museum.

Speaking at the opening, Minister Aung Min said that U Thant was one of the most respected leaders on the international stage.

The museum will serve as a tribute to U Thant's life, as well as a public center for lectures and events
