The Department of Border Trade has announced that a meeting to discuss trade between the Bangladesh and Myanmar and the high security fence that stretches along border between the two countries has been postponed until May due to ongoing conflict in Rakhine State.
“Due to the current situation in Maungdaw, the 7th High-level Border Trade Force Meeting will be postponed until May,” said Yan Naing Myint, the deputy director of Sittwe Border Trade.
The meeting was originally planned for sometime in March at Cox’s Bazar, which lies across the border from Maungdaw in Bangladesh.
In the 2012-2013 fiscal year, the average amount of border trade was US$ 6.3 million. The export amount was $ 6.2 million and the import amount was $87,000.
“We export items such as tamarind seed, fresh ginger, dry plum, and plum and import clothes, such as t-shirts and vests," said Yan Naing Myint.
