A Burmese government delegation headed by President’s Office Minister Soe Thane is heading to Singapore this week to meet with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and other top Singaporean officials for a regional “knowledge-sharing” mission.

Industry-Minister-Soe-ThaneInitiated and led by Dr. Noeleen Heyzer, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), the five-day study visit is “an opportunity for the Myanmar Ministers to gain first-hand experience of Singapore’s industrial development policies and strategies to attract foreign investment, provide decent productive jobs for people, and to do so in an environmentally sustainable way,” said a UN press release on Monday.

“The focus on sharing of expertise and experience will be an invaluable chance for Singapore to assist the Government of Myanmar to take advantage of the global resurgence of interest in investing in their economy and future development,” said Dr. Heyzer.

As part of the program in Singapore, the Burmese delegates will also be briefed on Singapore’s experience in developing and managing industrial parks, land use planning, housing policies, and technical and vocational education systems, UNESCAP said.

“This visit is the first in a series of ministerial-level knowledge networking missions being planned by ESCAP,” said Dr. Heyzer. “There is such a wealth of policy experience and innovation across our region, and we are working to unlock these knowledge assets by forging closer ties between our least-developed countries and those who have been successful in building stronger, more inclusive and sustainable economic growth.”
