Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – Lower House MP Thein Nyunt, who was expelled from the National Democratic Front (NDF), has applied to the Union Election Commission (UEC) in Naypyitaw to form a new political party to be called the “National Democracy New Party.”
Thein Nyunt, who submitted the application on Monday, would be the chairman of the party; Lower House MP Kyi Myint of Latha would serve as secretary; and Upper House MP Phone Myint Aung would serve as information officer; according to Phone Myint Aung.
Initially, the new party would have about 20 leaders including Thein Nyunt, Kyi Myint, Phone Myint Aung, Regional MP Kyaw and San San Myint and hip hop singer Ya Tha, said a party spokesperson.
The UEC has recognized the MPs who were expelled from the NDF as independent MPs, Phone Myint Aung told Mizzima.
The NDF, a breakaway faction of the National League for Democracy, was founded by Thein Nyunt, Khin Maung Swe and Dr. Than Nyein to contest in the 2010 election.
The NDF expelled Thein Nyunt for allegedly disclosing controversial financial matters to the media. Initially, the new party would have more than 1,000 party members in Thingangyun Township, Phone Myint Aung told Mizzima.
