The Press Council of Cambodia (PCC) plans to request the Cambodian government to pardon imprisoned journalist Ros Sokhet, who had been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for spreading disinformation through text messages.
The “Phnom Penh Post” on 6 May 2010 quoted Ek Visarakhun, secretary general of the PCC, as saying that the council had monitored Ros Sokhet’s case and is drafting a letter that will be sent to the Interior Ministry requesting for his pardon.
The Phnom Penh Municipal Court on 6 November 2009 sentenced Ros Sokhet to two years in prison for spreading disinformation by sending derogatory text messages to Soy Sopheap, the publisher of “Deum Ampil News” and a commentator for Bayon TV.
Relatives of Ros Sokhet had petitioned the council to intervene in the case.
