Villagers from Yay Phyu Township in Tanintharyi Region claim that heavy trucks used by the Italian-Thai Development Company for the Dawei Project are damaging village roads.
Villagers claim the constant flow of heavy trucks from the Italian-Thai Development Company using local roads in the Na Bu Leh, Mu Du and Nyaung Pin Seik villages are destroying the roads, but company is not repair them.
U Soe Thein, who has close friends in the villages, told Karen News.
“Because of the damage to the roads, civilian cars are getting stuck in the holes and mud on the roads. The large company trucks are driving on the road everyday and causing the damage. In previous years, the company has repaired the damaged roads.”
A local resident said that they would stop their heavy trucks using the roads.
“We are requesting the company to repair the damage done our roads”.
Villager in the area, and in particular those from Klone Hta village, are angry the Italian-Thai Development Company has forced relocated residents in the project area.
It was reported in the Myanmar Alin [New Light of Myanmar], a state owned newspaper, that President Thein Sein, during his meeting with Thailand’s Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, agreed to step up efforts to finish the Dawei deep-sea port project.
The Italian-Thai Development Company is a Thai owned company that is developing the $60 billion mega Tavoy/Dawei Development Project in Tavoy, Southern Burma. The project includes a deep-sea port, a 250-square-kilometer light and heavy industrial zone, a 4,000-megawatt coal-fired power plant, and railways links to the Thai border in Kanchanaburi.
