25 June 2010: New registration fees for two-wheelers have been reduced by Burma’s Transport Department in Hakha town, Chin state western Burma from the first week of this month.
“We are issuing new registration for two-wheelers at lower fees but we will not tolerate people driving without license after this. We will seize all vehicles flouting rules,” warned a Transport Department employee.
The first phase of the registration was from February to March 2010. This is the second phase. Most two-wheelers in question are imported from China and the registration fees used to be about Kyat 3 lakhs. Now it has been reduced to between Kyat 1 to 2 lakhs.
There are about 7000 to 8000 two-wheelers in Hakha town and about 4000 of them are already registered. The rest need to have registration but some vehicle owners have an understanding with authorities where proper registration is not required.
It is learnt that from this month the police will detain those who have not completed 18 years on the orders of the state authorities and the Transport Department.
The order comes after an under 18 year old girl died in a motorcycle accident in Hakha town in May 2010. -
