Though the Government Technology Institute (GTI) was opened on December 15, 2008, the students are facing problems related to transportation as the location is far from Hakha city, Chin state.
The Institute building is situated three miles from Hakha City and the Burmese government has made no arrangement for transportation. The students therefore have to travel on their bicycle or walk.
A student said, "We believe that it will be very convenient for our state as it's a higher educational institution, but now many students are facing problems regarding transportation as we do not own vehicles."
In this regard, Mr. Pho Tin, a lecturer of the GTI recommended that the problems of the students be understood so "we are going to be provided with ferry car service within February 2009", he added.
In this school, only a student who has passed class 10 with at least 320 marks can enroll. Now there are 37 students. The compulsory and optional subjects are Civil, Electronic Power, Electronic Communication, Mechanical Power and Computer Numerical Control.
The GTI School can only award a Diploma degree, as it is a two-year project. However, it will offer B Tech and BE degrees soon.
Most students belong to Hakha, ThanTlang, Falam, MinTat, Tedim and TonZang townships.
Regarding the opening of GTI in Chin state, a local pessimistically said, "It seems to be aimed at wooing voters for the 2010 general elections. After the election is over it might be closed!"
Construction of the Hakha GTI School began in 2007 by the Burmese government. The land belonged to Pastor Hoicungtum but the junta took it from him in order to build the school.
