The Chin Famine Emergency Relief Committee (CFERC), a relief group comprised of Chin social activists based in Mizoram state, northeast India, today said that they have no more funds left to continue relief work in helping victims of food crisis in Chin state, Burma.
"So far, we had assisted them (victims of famine like food crisis) with the funds that were contributed by overseas Chin communities. But there is no more money left. Therefore, we cannot continue helping them," Mr. Chanthawng, chairman of CFERC said.
Mr. Chanthawng further said that fund deficiency had made its relief works for famine victims ineffective.
Last week, villagers from food crisis hit areas of Chin state came to Saiha district in Mizoram to collect aid from CFERC. However, the villagers turned back home empty handed as CFERC could not help them anymore due to shortage of funds, according to CFERC.
Around 100,000 of over 500,000 people in Chin state are facing shortage of food. The worse famine affected areas are Thangtlang, Paletwa, Matupi and Falam Townships, CFERC added.
CFERC set up five working groups in different areas of the Indo-Burma border areas in Mizoram to provide relief aid to the victims of famine caused by bamboo flowering.
"We put the people from the worst affected areas on our priority list in providing relief aid," Mr. Chanthawng explained.
CFERC had received around Rs. 1,000,000 in Indian currency as relief donation from oversea Chin communities.
