A football tournament that is being hosted with funds collected from locals by authorities in Matupi - the second capital of Chin state – has made some people angry.
“Around 60,000 Kyats (US $70) for food and 8,000 (US $9) Kyats for uniforms were collected by authorities. Authorities were paid 20,000 Kyats in membership fees from each team,” said a local who didn’t want to be named.
Some people are unhappy about having to pay so much money for their athletes to take part in the tournament.
“We couldn’t participate because we can’t afford to pay the money they asked for,” said one person who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Eighteen-athletes, from Cangbawng, Khoboi, Lawngvan block of Matupi, Laymyo football club, the Education Department club, the Combination Department club, and football teams from Phaneng and Ngaleng villages competed during the tournament.
The football committee was formed by Township Administrator U Risum Khiang, , United Solidarity and Development Party member U Peng Tun and the director of the Matupi Sports Department.
The tournament started this week, and the final match will take place next week.
