Chin State received the lowest score in college examination results for the last academic year in the entire country.

During the 2011/12 school year only 14.91 percent passed. That’s 1093 out of 7332 students, according to Chin World website.

Although the northwesternmost state ranked the lowest, the country’s overall academic rating wasn’t much better. According to a recent story published in 7 Day journal, results released on June 9, reveal only 1.6 hundred thousand passed out a total of 4.6 hundred thousand students in Burma.

More students received a passing grade in Mon State (52 percent passed) than anywhere else in the country.

Several factors probably contribute to the failing education system in Chin State. Families are struggling to earn enough money to survive. Many parents have to take their children out of school so they can work to help support the family. As a result education may be seen as something secondary by students and their families. This can also play a role in lowering teachers’ motivation to provide good education.

One student from Pakuaku Collage said there is a lack of interest in education by both students and teachers.

“Most students in Chin state want to leave for foreign countries by the time they reach Grade 10. Teachers are not making enough effort to provide quality education,” he said.

Despite this year’s low scores it’s still better than the previous school year where only 13.67 passed. This year, 14.91 percent passed which is one-percent higher than in 2010/11.
