Under the leadership of Mr. Hung Ngai, Chief Minister of the Chin State Government, only 35% of the Chin population will be below the poverty line by 2015, said Mr. Shwe Khan Thang, an administrator in Hakha, the capital of Chin State, Burma.
The administrator was addressing the ‘State Rules and Regulations Workshop’ conducted recently in Hakha. He said that 65% of the population of Chin State will be brought above the poverty line by 2015. The Chin State population is the poorest among the 14 states and divisions in Burma.
“An indication of the state’s poverty is that 73% of the Chin people are poor. The new government is preparing to have fewer people living below the poverty line,” said Mr. Shwe Khan Thang.
In an effort to tackle poverty, the state government has been preparing to issue loans to the public, said Mr. Thang. He added that the local government will issue loans of three lahks kyat predominantly to those who have national identity cards and landlord licenses.
The first phase of the loan system will commence this month, and around 300 people have already been registered to get a loan since August 2011.
The loan system will be in place properly from next year and the state government expects it will improve the peoples’ chances of earning a sufficient living. Khonumthung news
