Patients in Thantlang town of Chin state, Burma are disappointed at the way they are being treated in the local hospital by the health director Dr. Tet Htun Nweih.
"The Thantlang health director sends midwives to rural areas without providing them travel costs and local conveyance charges or a salary. The director is also alleged to have siphoned off support funds from the Merlin health group, being provided for rural areas for the treatment of malaria," said a town elder from Thantlang.
When Merlin, which is helping treat malaria in Chin state, conducts a meeting and the health director forces it to organize it in his office. After the meeting, the director asks for rent for using his office, other expenses and petrol charges. The petrol he sells for extra income.
The health director also collects fees from patients for treatment as it is done on his orders. It is learnt that he never goes to the hospital and but sends his staff members and nurses to the hospital on his behalf for treating patients.
"Recently, a farmer from the rural area came to the hospital. The doctor took Kyat 80,000 for his treatment but he did not treat him at the hospital," said a local from Than tlang.
Dr. Tet Htun Nweih has been deducting hospital staff salaries and they complained to officials in Hakha but the authorities took no action since 2010.
"The central hospital authorities transferred Dr. Tet Htun Nweih to Chin state because of his behaviour, yet the central authorities are turning a deaf ear to local people’s complaints," said a town elder from Thantlang.
A town elder from Thantlang told Khonumthung that Mr. Hung Ngai, Chief Minister of Chin state also warned Dr. Tet Htun Nweih in April.
