As a preparation for next 2015 election, Kayan New Generation Youth (KNGY) has been holding training on election knowledge in public inside Kayan region in Karenni and Shan States, Myanmar (Burma).

The trainings were held simultaneously from September 11 to 13, among Kayan natives live in Daw-Ngan-Khar ward, De-maw-so township and Bor-ram village, southern Shan state, said Ko Ko Gyi, member of KNGY.

He said, “Trainings are not supporting for election campaign. Our intention is to facilitate people to be familiar with the nature of election to some extent.”

Training explained not only election knowledge but also democracy, human rights, and some facts and information on constitution of Burma as well.

In addition, when Proportional Representatives system is explained, KNGY has become aware of that even existing First-Past-The-Post(FPTP) election system used in 2010 is also not well understood by people, said Ko Ko Gyi.

The trainings are being started since August 22-24 at Hsepu area and already instructed in Pekhong township in Shan state. Also in September, election system trainings will be launched at Aung Lan Cho, Naypidaw, and Thauk-Yay-Khat area of Karen state.

Kayan region means where majority of Kayan-race people have been living, especially in De-maw-so township, Karenni state, southern Shan state, east part of Pyinmanar township and Thantaunggyi township, Karen state. It is good sign for their party since youths are learning voting knowledge. The Kayan party has to depend on them for imminent election, said Kayan ethnic state minister U Lawrence from Kayan National Party.

“It’s a good sign as youths become interested in politics. We do not fully engage in organizing part. We do not have business and funding like other parties, but we believe our Kayan race,” he said.

Kayan National Party only won in southern Shan state in 2010 election, but in forthcoming 2015 election they will contest in all Kayan region constituencies excluding Pyinmana Township, said U Lawrence.

Such kind of electoral education trainings by youths will be continued in anticipation of election time in the whole Kayan region.
