Dhaka, Bangladesh: The outgoing Burmese Ambassador to Bangladesh U Pyae Thann made a farewell call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh at her official residence Gono Bhaban on November 16, according to the Daily Star of Bangladesh.

During the visit they discussed the issue of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. At present, there are more than 28,000 official refugees living in two official camps: Nayapara and Kutupalong.

An additional 12,000 unofficial refugees live in the Leda (Tal) camp and over 40,000 unregistered or unofficial refugees live in the unofficial Kutupalong makeshift camp.

Unofficial refugees get no assistance from the government or NGOs but struggle to survive by finding work outside the camp, said a refugee leader from the Leda camp.

Refugees in unofficial camps also face the threat of arrest by Bangladeshi authorities if they try to leave the camps.

The lack of aid has left thousands without adequate food, healthcare and other necessary supplies.

Rohingyas have fled across the border from Burma to escape political and religious persecution in Arakan State but hope to return when they are no longer under threat, said a refugee leader from Nayapara camp.

Many refugees fear forced repatriation by Bangladeshi authorities.

During the meeting at Gono Bhaban, the Bangladeshi Prime Minister thanked the Burmese government for the release of its opposition leader Daw Aung Sun Suu Kyi, calling it a victory of democracy and human rights.

The Prime Minister said her government wants to maintain friendly and peaceful relations with all neighbouring countries, including Burma, and accepted an invitation to visit Rangoon at a convenient time in the future.
