A hundred families will lose their homes because of the Kyaukpru airport extension project. The airport is being upgraded to international standards, said a local from Kyaukpru.

On August 11 and 12, a survey team checked land for the Kyaukpru airport extension. Land is to be confiscated from nearby areas, the local said.

The Kyaukpru big cemetery will lose half of its land from the west of the old airport and in the south, Taungyorn village will lose 100 homes of 60 families of Arakanese Rohingya and 40 families of Arakanese Rakhine, according to the survey team.

“We have to move from here, but we don’t know when and where,” said a victim from Taungyorn village.

“If the new airport is built, it will be good for our town, but we will lose our cemetery which is old where our forefathers are buried,” said a resident.
