Teknaf, Bangladesh: Rohingya refugees in the unregistered Kutupalong makeshift camp have not been provided any emergency relief following floods last Tuesday. They are facing starvation, said a Rohingya refugee committee member.

Refugees in both legal and illegal camps have been affected by the floods following incessant heavy rain. The unregistered refugees are in dire straits. There is no sign of help for the unregistered refugees.

Many huts were destroyed and more than 15,000 people are without shelter and have not received any emergency relief in Kutupalong makeshift camp after the flash floods and landslides on June 15, said a refugee from the makeshift camp.

Due to the floods and landslides, three refugees died and some were injured. "It was the worst rain in three decades and was particularly devastating as 12 centimeters (4.5 inches) of rain fell in just three hours, sources said.

In the worst-hit area, Teknaf, which is home to hundreds of thousands of ethnic Rohingya refugees, some flood victims said there was food crisis with government aid not reaching the needy.

But, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) listed huts which were damaged by heavy rain last Tuesday.

“Refugees haven't eaten for days. There is extreme food crisis. We have not got any help from any quarter so far,” said a refugee leader on condition of anonymity.

“Refugees have little place to sleep. They don't have food and no place to cook, but we are trying to rebuild our huts,” said another refugee from the camp.

In the affected areas of Teknaf, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nizam Uddin and MP Bodiur Rahaman distributed emergency relief but refugees are not receiving rations from the Bangladesh government, said a women refugee.
